Matador Models 1/76 Mk I Wireless Tank

Much of the development and use of the Mk I Wireless Tank is still pretty cloudy: we still don't really know how many that were built, and how they were actually used. (And even if: some sources state they were employed in numbers during the Cambrai offensive, others suggest that they were mainly used for training and trials.)

Anyhow, now we can build a replica of this vehicle - important in that it was the first succesfull attempt to mount radio equipment into a standard tank - using a special conversion kit, to be used on the Airfix Mk I kit.

The kit is moulded in light yellow resin, and the main parts are a new hull roof, a new drivers compartment and new side sponsons. In addition to this you get a number of small parts, like exhaust shrouds, hatches, framworks, spacers etc, plus a large aerial in thick copper wire. The mouldings are sharp and crisp, and the rivets are well defined and nicely spaced.

Many of the small parts have flash on them: nothing serious, but still time-consuming to remove. One possible problem are the side sponsons, that are not completely blanked off, as per the original, but the holes will have to be attended in some way, with a figure or something else, not to appear like, well, holes.

As you could expect from Matador Models the plans are good. You also get historical details and notes on the camouflage and markings of this tank. I haven't built it yet, and the aerial with all the spacers and wires will most certainly be really tricky to build.

All in all a very nice conversion kit. The only thing to grumble about would perhaps be the price, but then again if you are a real aficionado you will certainly get it. The kit can be bought from the Scale Link site
