This kit comes in a blister-pack, and contains 26 parts: the main components are the hull and two tracks. It is moulded in a hard, light yellow resin. The moulding is good, with only some easily removed flash on the sprue with the finer parts. The smaller parts are delicate, and will require care. (For instance, you get those very fine rails for hanging grousers.) The detailing is in general better and, more to the point, finer than on Retromodels Whippet: the rivets are small and well
aligned. The Hotchkiss MG:s however, are undersized and simplified and are best
replaced. The kit comes with a good set of
plans ![]() But when you look at it, you can see that there is something slightly amiss here. OK, so the kit is slightly underscale; the hull is some 1,5mm to narrow, but the length is correct; the angle of the engine cover is a bit too shallow; the angle of the front is a bit too pointed. The real problem, however, is the tracks. The detailing is much better than on Retromodels Whippet, and the mud chutes are much more delicate, but the the front and end of the track assembly is much too pointed. The back is some 6,5mm high, when it should be some 8,5mm. I know that all this sounds frightfully fussy, but you can really see that something is wrong there. And I see no simple solution to this problem, short of building a completely new set of tracks yourself. So you just have to grin and bear it, I guess. This Whippet is much better than the Black Star kit, and better in detailing than the Retromodels version, but is let down by poor
tracks. It can be bought directly from Milcast - see kit list. So, we still have no REALLY good braille scale kit of the Whippet.
