All of us who want to build WW1 dioramas or spice up our models with
little men, must of course use the figures that are available to us.
And as we all know they are in general geared at the wargaming
community, which means that most of the figures they tend to have
dramatic action poses. Which is a bit problematic as many, yes even
most modellers as myself prefer more casual poses. Also, we Great
War modellers have the problem with many 20mm figures being a little
bit crude, but beggers can't be choosers, right?
Well, now they can!
A new Model Company
has seen the light of day: it's called W^D Models, and the man
behind it all is Barry Williams. And he aims to fill this empty
niche. (This enterprise has been under way for some two years now.)
These soldiers are
not a single set, but samples from a first range of 17 individual
soldiers. They all show WW1 British WW1
in casual poses, and all have separate heads and/or arms. The four
here show one digging, one bending down, one carrying two
sacks and finally an officer standing with his arms behind his back.
As you can see in the photos to the left, all have interchangeble
heads - helmets or soft caps - making them suitable both for early
and late war periods. Two of them also has separate arms, for
maximum flexibility.
There is just one
word for these figures: superb, absolutely superb. These are the
best smallscale WW1 figures that I have ever seen!
The poses are
natural and anatomically correct. The historical accuracy is top
notch. And the sculpting is most impressive: you can see details on
these figures that would make you think they were 1:35. If you don't
believe me: just click on the pics to the left! Fantastic!
There is none of
that clunkyness or a bit doll-like appearance that you see so often
in white metal figures in this scale. Heads and hands are all to
scale.
More details of
these wonderful figures will be posted when I get them. Stay tuned.
Barry himself can be
reached by e-mail.
